Ernest Satow (The first UK Diplomat to work in Japan following the opening up of Japan in the 19th century) Satow spent many years in Japan, marrying a Japanese national, and learning the language. His experiences provide us with a fascinating history of life in Japan at this time in history, and also helps us to understand how Japan still manages to retain much of its tradition in the modern world.
